What is Yerba Maté?
Long ago, Yerba Maté mystified the Guarani Indians of Paraguay and
folklore already glorified an exlir made from the leaves of a sacred tree by
the time that Spaniards arrived in the 16th century. Long before modern science
could overwhelmingly support the native's beliefs in the medicinal qualitites
of Maté, they had named it "the drink of the gods" because it was treasured
for its apparent physiological benefits as well as the ability to uplift the
spirit. It turns out, that the Guarani hadn't stumbled upon just any ordinary
tea; they had discovered what is now considered a goldmine of nutritional and
healthful benefits that at the same time provides a "green" energy-one without
adverse side-effects.
What is so amazing about Yerba Maté?
The answer becomes plainly obvious when you look at a a comparison of the
two beverages and see the overwhelming evidence for making this revolutionary
tea part of your daily lifestyle. While it still may be considered "the drink
of the gods" by some, researchers are now calling Maté a "liquid
vegetable" because of its nutritional value.
Maté contains "mateinie" which comes from the same family of stimulants
as caffeine, but unlike caffeine, the Maté herb is classified with a
group of herbs that are considered "tonic". Tonic herbs display no known serious
side-effects, contraindications and concerns about dosage, complicated usage
schedules, and do not over-stimulate. Only less than five percent of herbs
are considered "tonic": ginseng, ginkgo biloba, and even peppermint are a few
of the tonic herbs that might sound familiar.
The list of benefits that accompanies drinking Maté is vast and varied.
Extensive scientific research over many years has proven that it may fight
fatigue and stress, stimulate digestion, increase energy and mental vitality,
lower LDL cholesterol, promote a balanced metabolism, improve blood circulation
and detoxification, encourage weight loss, alleviates hay fever and allergies,
strengthens the immune system, does not over-stimulate and is not habit-forming...
(unless you plan on starting a habit of feeling alert and healthy!) and is
even recommended for arthritis and headaches. The list goes on and on. Maté contains
196 active compounds - compared with the 144 found in green tea, including
panthothenic acid, protein, carotene calcium, iron, potassium, manganese, magnesium,
choline, and vitamins A, C, E, B complex, and many more. A 1995 Pasteur Institute
and Paris Scientific Society study recognized Maté as containing practically
all the vitamins necessary to sustain life and that Maté is a more potent
antioxidant than vitamin C
Many popular beverages today contain caffeine, a stimulant commonly associated
with several negative side-effects, such as being strongly diuretic, promoting
over-stimulation, addiction, sleep-cycle disruption, withdrawl symptoms, even
unusual heart palpitations from over-consumption. There are few benefits, if
any, attributed to caffeine and it has no healthful nor nutritional advantages
to making it a part of your daily lifestyle. Finally, now that you know Yerba
Maté can provide the energy boost that your coffee or fountain drink
can offer to you, but Maté offers so much more than these beverages
ever will.
